お待たせしましたぁ〜!! みなさん、こんにちは!! 香取貴信です。どうぞよろしく!!
やんちゃな高校生だった私がディズニーランドで働き始め、失敗したり叱られたりするなかで「仕事」「教育」「サービス」の本当の意味を教わったお話を書いた『社会人として大切なことはみんなディズニーランドで教わった』（日本語版）が発行されたのが2002年５月。この本は多くの読者さんや書店さんに愛されて、おかげさまで発行部数10万部を超えるベストセラーとなりました。正直ビックリしていると同時に、みなさんに心から感謝しています。本当にありがとうございます!!
あの本を発行させていただいてから連日、メールやお手紙などで、たくさんのご感想やご意見を寄せていただいています。そのなかには、中国やそのほかの国から留学で日本に来て、一生懸命に勉強しながら働いている方々からの「日本語」での感想もあります。
以前、上司から聞いたことがあります。中国からの留学生のなかには、本当に貧しいなかで育った方もいらっしゃるのだと。そうした方たちは、自分を育ててくれたお父さんやお母さんになんとか恩返しをしようと、一生懸命に勉強して特待生となり、日本に留学して、さまざまなことを学ぼうと精一杯に顔晴って(がんばって)いるのだそうです。
日本のイメージだと、特待生であれば授業料もタダなのでは？ と思いがちですが、じつは卒業後に授業料を返さなくてはいけないところもあるそうです。そんな人たちは、卒業後も日本に残り、日本で働いて、授業料を返し終わってから母国に戻るそうです。
そういった留学生のみなさんのあいだで、私の体験が書かれた本が、ぼろぼろになるまでまわし読みをされているんだと、上司が教えてくれたのです。
そのことを『社会人として大切なことはみんなディズニーランドで教わった II 《熱い気持ち編》』に登場した、私の親友で「夢を現実にする男」佐賀屋君に話したところ、「じつは俺のところにも、日本人で『英語をマスターして世界へ』と夢を持っている人たちから感想が来てるんだ!!」というのです。
ここで私たちの情熱に火がついてしまいました。彼らのために、私たちにもなにかできないか……。考えた結果、『社会人として大切なことはみんなディズニーランドで教わった』の英語版をつくろう！ ということになったのです。
とはいえ、私自身は相も変わらず英語が大の苦手……。しかし、アメリカのディズニーランドでも働いたことのある佐賀屋君や、その仲間の人たち、それに英会話スクールの「７アクト」さんが協力してくれて、ついに英語版が完成しました!!
この本で特徴的なのは、たとえば小見出しのところに「jp14」なんていう表示がしてあること。これ、じつは「日本語版の14ページの翻訳だよ!!」という意味なんです。つまり、日本語版の本文と見くらべて、英語でいうときのニュアンスや言い回しの違いが「より感じとりやすいように」なっているわけです。なのでぜひ『社会人として大切なことはみんなディズニーランドで教わった』日本語版とあわせて読んでくださいね。
ほかにも、ちょっと難しかったりポイントとなるような英単語・英熟語には、日本語訳のルビが振ってあります。だから、辞書がなくてもなんとか読めるはず。さらに、本文中で斜体になっている英単語・英熟語についてはコラムに関連情報が載っていたりと、親切なんですねぇ……。
これ、みんな「英語嫌いの香取君でも楽しんで勉強できるように(笑)」という配慮だそうです。そこまでされると、私自身も勉強せざるをえない状況に……(汗)。
冗談はともかく、英語の苦手な人はもちろん、英語が好きな人も一度、本文だけでなくコラムも読んでみてください。知っているようで知らなかった英語学習に役立つ「へぇ〜」がたくさんあり、絶対に参考になるはずです!!
この本が、英語を勉強したい人、英語で本を読んでみたいと思っている人、日本語がまだあまり得意じゃないけど、日本に来て一生懸命に勉強や仕事で顔晴っている留学生や外国人のみなさんのお役に立てれば、最高に幸せです!!

At the time of this story, I was working at Cinderella Castle Mystery
Tour. At that time, Mr. Shiro was the supervisor of Fantasy Land in
which Cinderella Castle is located.
It was the last day at Cinderella Castle for our leader Mr. Hikuda due

secretly planning to each give one rose to Mr. Hikuda as a way to

I was put in charge of ordering the flowers for the surprise ceremony.
I ordered forty roses from the flower shop and picked them up on my way
to work.
I stuffed them in my car and drove to work. I headed down the same

There was a bit of a traffic jam that day, so I decided to take a

I wasn't paying attention and got into a fender-bender with a scooter
that was coming up behind me.
I jumped out of the car and ran to check on the rider before calling an
ambulance. We were going slowly, so luckily he wasn't injured. He was

I called the office to explain the situation and promised to call back
once I had taken care of everything.
After I had finished all the paperwork for the accident, I went to the

hospital to visit the biker. When I finally calmed down, I remembered

"Oh no! It's Hikuda's last day. I have to take those roses to the
office as soon as I can!" I called the office again. This time Mr.
Shiro answered the phone.
"Hey, Katori! Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry for all the trouble."
"Well, we all decided that it is okay for you to not show up today."
"No, I have to be there. I'll be right there."
"Don't worry about us, we'll be fine here. What's so important?"
"To tell you the truth, it's Mr. Hikuda's last day and I'm in charge of
the flowers."
"I see. You drive carefully, okay? Come and see me when you get here.
Promise?"
"Promise."

I drove to work more carefully than usual, just as Mr. Shiro told me.
I went to see him as soon as I got to the office.
"Mr. Katori, are you all right?"

"I've decided to let you have the day off because you aren't in the best
emotional condition right now."
"Emotional condition?"
"That's right. Right now you are trying hard to act normal, but I think

"What are you talking about?"
"The guests come in through the front gate, right? That's when they are

greeted by a warm smile by the staff there. Next, the staff at the
attraction gives them the best service they can and it is a good
experience. Then they go somewhere else and are met by different
staff... This keeps on going, getting great service from the staff and
the good memories double and triple. That's what I'm talking about.
Service is multiplication!"
"I see."

"You got it! That's why I think your mental condition is so important.

of the guests today! I'll bring the flowers for Mr. Hikuda and you can

I followed his advice and worked in the office that day.
《コラム》
●drive to work
「drive」には「運転する」のほかに「クルマで行く」という訳され方があります。「drive to work」で「クルマで仕事へ行く」という意味になります。もし「歩いていく」なら「walk to work」です。「Go to work by car」としてしまいがちですが、ぜひ「drive to work」を使ってみてください。
●head down the same streets
「head」は「（頭を向けて）進んでいく」という意味ですので、ここは「同じ道を下っていった」となります。「Go down the street」と同意です。
●come and see me when you get here
「come and see」で「会いに来る」という意味です。「come to see」ともいえます。
ここでのポイントは「when you get here」。このように「〜したとき」「〜するとき」という短文をつけくわえるだけで上級表現になります。短文のつけくわえでワンランクアップをめざすのと同時に、次の行にある「Promise?」（あなた、約束できる？）といった、シンプルだけれど、いいたいことをひと言で表わすことのできる上級さも、めざしたいですね。
●英語で算数？
本文に「その式に０をかける」という部分がありますが、たとえば「１＋１＝２」を英語でいえますか？ あまり使う機会のない文章に思えますが、でも海外の小学生なら誰でもいえるレベルの英語であるはずですよね。
難しい文は話せるけれど、簡単なことは話せない。上級になればなるほど、こういう現象が起こりがちです。
ちなみに解答は、「one plus (add) one equal two.」です。また、「plus （add）」のところを「minus（take away）」にすれば引き算、「times」にすれば掛け算、「divided by」にすれば割り算になります。
